Resources 4 Africa hosted the 6th edition of the annual Junior Indaba on 3rd & 4th November 2020 online.

The Junior Indaba, known for its straight-talking and frank discussions, examined both the state of play in South Africa and the exploration and junior mining ‘hot spots’ in the rest of Africa. Local and international experts gave their views on the impact of Covid-19 on the junior mining sector as well as the latest political, economic and regulatory developments and what the future holds for junior mining and exploration projects.

We were privileged to have the Honourable Minister Gwede Mantashe open the Indaba and reiterate the Government’s commitment to delivering an exploration strategy by early 2021 and also to hear the insights from our Legends – Helen Pein, Deshnee Naidoo, Michael Jones and Jim Rutherford. Their extraordinary careers and personal insights will be remembered for a long time to come. There were also plenty of good news stories from juniors who have been able to continue with their projects despite the disruptions caused by Covid-19 which was truly heartening to hear.

Panel discussions focused on themes such as: which commodities are “hot” this year; the demand and future role of coal in the African energy markets; the impact of 4IR and the transition to a low-carbon economy on junior miners; and how local and international investors view the risks and challenges of junior mining.

The diverse line up of speakers from South Africa and other African countries was undoubtedly another one of the highlights, with showcase presentations from junior miners operating in South Africa, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Angola, DRC, Zambia, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Mali and Senegal.

All being well, we look forward to seeing you in person for the 7th edition of the Junior Indaba in 2021!
